May el-Toukhy's Woman Unknown is the only female competition film at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival (September 2–12). El-Toukhy wrote the script together with Maren Louise Käehne. The film is set in post-war Denmark in 1946, where a housekeeper with a hidden past sees her marriage plans threatened. El-Toukhy wants to explore how the female body is judged as a public domain. Mathilde Arcel and Carsten Bjørnlund star. Michael Rieks of Nordisk Film is producing, with a co-production between Zentropa, Nordisk Film Sweden, and Nafta Films. The festival also screens work by Herzog, Kore-eda, Boyle, and McDonagh in the main competition.
