As of August 2, the European Commission is enforcing new transparency rules under the AI Act. Chatbots must identify themselves as artificial intelligence. AI-generated content, including deepfake videos and audio, must be provided with clear labels and machine-readable markers. The rules also apply to emotion recognition systems and biometric categorization. The European AI Office supervises providers of general-purpose AI models. National authorities enforce the rules for other AI systems. Companies that violate the transparency obligations risk fines of up to fifteen million euros or three percent of their global annual turnover. Stricter rules for high-risk AI systems will follow in December 2027.
